Interview: Tips on Running

Reporter: After all that you accomplished, what drives you to continue running? After all that I have accomplished, my desire to please God is what drives me to continue running. I know He gifted me with this ability and I want to make sure that I give it my all before hanging up the spikes. He deserves my best. My family, close friends and the young girls I mentor is also what drives me. They always give me that extra push and encouragement to keep going. They will not let me settle for anything less than the best. I believe there is always room for improvement. For me, it is a constant challenge for me to be better than I was the day before. 2. How do you motivate yourself on days when you don't feel like running? I motivate myself on days I don’t feel like running by thinking about the end result. Personally, I cannot afford to take a day off or feel lazy. We only have 24 hours in a day and I do not have one minute to waste because of a feeling. I think of the things I have accomplished and that alone is enough motivation to rush and put on my training shoes. You are only as good as your last accomplishment or in my case your last victory race. 3. On average, how many times and miles do you run a month? I am sprinter so I do not run miles often but in my off-season I try to run about two miles every other day to stay in shape for Fall training. I practice Monday-Friday and occasionally on Saturdays for about 6 hours a day. I am not sure the exact number but I can say that it is a lot of time, sweat and tears put into the daily grind. 4. What's the weirdest or funniest thing that ever happened to you while running? The weirdest or funniest thing I ever had happened to me is at the beginning of this track season in March. I went out of my way to find a designer to paint my one of a kind, all gold track spikes with a bible verse on the side. They were nice! I went to warm up, came back to the tent and could not find my spikes anywhere! Luckily, I had back-up spikes in my bag but the whole entire I was thinking, who would dare steal my gold “godly” track spikes. My teammates still joke about the spikes saying that someone wanted to share my blessings and that they wanted to see if my spikes were magical. 5. What's your favorite types of fuel for running and why? My favorite types of fuel for running are coconut water, I love the taste and the small pieces of coconut inside. I am a huge fan of sautéed spinach; I can eat it every day. This is my secret but I love pickle pops and pickles!
